Inspired by Bernie Leahy's work, I brought fabric, thread and needle to figure drawing class last night. These pieces are so small(!), I don't think I can make the pieces any larger just yet. It is no small task to get the lines down and proportional. This was a 25 minute pose.
I didn't use a hoop, maybe this would make it easier.
Here is a more tentitive drawing in thread: click here now. This was a 10 minute pose.
wow, leahy's work is very intriguing...hand sewing has an angularity to the line that makes the images absorbing, they're almost like paper cut/slashes. definitely a technique worth investigating, keep at it!.... had to have a giggle at "big hair"(for obv. reasons!) "elsewhere 3" also, just lovely
Posted by: andree at May 5, 2004 12:15 PMHow interesting. I would not have thought to use needle and thread for a simple drawing. Great job.
Posted by: Lu at May 5, 2004 04:00 PMthese are really cool. and more interesting than something that might be technically more proficient, i think. (of course, my pencil drawings after 35 minutes are not actually more proficient than these.)
p.s. i think a hoop would definitely help - easier to be precise on the fabric with one
Posted by: carolyn at May 6, 2004 10:11 AMMelly, I love your sewn sketches - how very challenging and what a wonderful job you did. Yes I think a hoop would make it significantly easier. K.
Posted by: Karen Winters at May 8, 2004 09:47 AMI love these. :)
Posted by: alison at May 11, 2004 04:13 AMI think this is a fantastic idea. It is a very deliberate method of image making and takes away the temptation to make sketchy lines (something that my art teacher always tried to get me to do). I have decided to give it a go but doubt that my efforts will be anywhere near as successful. Thought I might also try other subjects. The challenge will be to keep the studies short.
