These are a few of my Favorite things...
Are you whistling?
I wish I could remember who spoke about rust dyeing and using vinegar on thier blog recently. When I read her blog I ran to the back yard, where I had some fabric under pieces of rusting metal and gathered them up. They had been back there through 20 inches(!) of snow for weeks on end. Hardly any rust.
I went to my dye studio, placed the whole deal in a plastic bucket, poured the vinegar and not even a week later...
This is what I got.
The piece in this photo is just a fat quarter. You know that I have well over a yard steeping down there right now.
Yum.
On a musical note, I am listening to:
Andrew Bird, a professional whistler (it must be a theme today) and violinist. He makes folk music like nobody's bidnez.
Tropicalia a group of Brazilian musicians that know thier stuff! I think this will be my spring anthem album. I am going to have to purchase some more music by Gal Costa!
Fiona Apple, need I say more?
Califone is also a new favorite. I found him/them by going over to Sam Beam's web site
Beautiful! Can you describe the process more fully? Is it really as simple as laying the fabric against rusty metal for a while and then soaking it? And is the metal involved in the soaking, or just the fabric? I really need to try this. . .
Posted by: jodi at March 13, 2006 06:24 PMWOW!! Your rusted fabric is fabulous!!! I was doing rusting with vinegar back in February too.
Amazing the difference the vinegar made!!
Lovely fabric! I have posted stuff about rusting fabric on my blog but back in November, I think. Great fun! Here's a link to what I used for mine - http://lizplummer.com/blog/2005/12/11/rusty-bucket/ - I wrapped it round like shibori.
I love reading your blog, and well done on your article in Quilting Arts!

Posted by: karokesuperstar at March 16, 2006 11:00 AMIt's really that easy to get fabric that looks this good? How colourfast is it? I am DROOLING over your fabric from all the way over here!!
Posted by: Caitlin at March 20, 2006 02:11 AMThe first post I saw about rusted fabric was on smarcoux.blogspot. I have also posted some machine quilted fabric which I rusted with wire wool.
