When I was home visiting my folks in Connecticut, my mother told me about this book. I was immediately intrigued. My mother loves to describe books, and she got me on this one. I asked for the name again and she popped out of her seat, ran over to the computer and ordered a copy for me to be delivered to my P.O. Box (which I love, as a concept. Going to the post office to pick up mail is so wonderful. And to turn the dial of an old brass box, in a studied calm manner is superb in itself).
So when it came, I immediately read two chapters and knew that although I was not finished with the book I was reading at the time (I only read one book at a time), I would love reading this one.
Now it may seem odd to you, I don't eat red, white or pink meat. I do eat fish. I can't call myself vegetarian, really. I am just a healthier eater, but I love hearing about and reading about food. Not to mention eating good food. When I sit across from people who are eating good looking meat, I must know how it was made. I just like thinking about it. Like the time I cooked for a family I worked for, I didn't eat meat then either but they wanted me to make a stuffing of dried apricots, rosemary and garlic to stuff into pork. I didn't even try it, but I knew it would be awesome. It smelled too good not to be.
My favorite podcast is Good Food out of KCRW. And truly, I like it better when cooks come on, or when they review restaurants. It makes me want to shop in the local farmers markets and to go to Los Angeles.
But really! Receiving a book, through the mail! Such LUXURY! It makes me want to order books through the mail all the time.
Mel, I think the author also wrote "The Reach of a Chef," which I've been trying to get from my library. You might also like "Kitchen Confidential," by Anthony Bourdain. It's a great, entertaining read. Also try "Garlic and Sapphires," by Ruth Reichl (she's editor-in-chief of gourmet) - also very, very entertaining. Can you guess I love to read about food and chefs, too? Aloha, Dianna

I have a P.O. box too. Each time I check the mail it feels like a little special trip filled with a certain amount of great expectancy and anticipation...
You might get a kick out of "My Year of Meats." It's a totally quirky novel about a Japanese woman living in the states who makes a documentary about the beef industry for Japanese TV. Or something like that. I read it years ago. It was given to me by a stranger on an airplane -- also a delightful way to receive a book.
Posted by: Deborah at June 23, 2007 10:26 AMthat does sound nice, getting a good book in the mail. I'm off work this week with the new puppy and how nice it would be to open the mailbox and see a new book to read. I just finished "the Jane Austin Book Club." I enjoyed it.
Posted by: ellie at June 22, 2007 02:36 PMI hope you enjoy the book. The first half is good, sometimes exciting and (I think) thought-provoking. However, in my opinion, the second half is the best. I plan to get his newest book and read that as well. Love!
