My goodness. Sometimes I know how to lay down a happy, chipper page! If these colors don't smack you with good cheer, I don't know what will!
I have some reading to do! I have let my Birder's World subscription pile up! And if you know me, this magazine is important! So I started reading and fell in love with a certain photo of a beautiful Florida Scrub Jay and well, got busy getting to know his form.
So, you know, part of the reason I like to draw and paint birds is because I want to know and understand them. I like to read about them, get to know their habits, favorite foods, favorite nesting spots. Basically, drawing and painting birds allows me a more intimate means to research and get to know birds. I often use Cornell's web site and I get lost reading-I mean, who doesn't find cooperative breeding interesting? I love being able to hear the bird's voice.
Aw geez.

I was able to gaze at our local red-tailed hawk up close the other day for ten minutes. I really regret not having my camera - I've got to get a pocket-sized one! I love my backyard birds.
That is so beautiful Melly! It makes my heart sing to look at it.
LOVE! that page!
I love this page, but what a great idea to use a magazine as a resource for drawing. I am going to have to look for this mag.
It is chipper indeed! It's beautiful!
Laurie, My love affair with birds had a serious start one Earth Day when I took a trash bag on a walk and cleaned up my neighborhood. When I was finished I walked over to a dumpster, whistling and unaware. When I finally looked up as I approached the dumpster there atop the pile of trash sat a Red Tailed Hawk. We were about 4 feet apart and we looked each other in the eye. It was amazing. I would like birds to have better pickings than that though.
Debbie JL, using photographs and magazines as inspiration when drawing is a long standing tradition. When I was in school, our library had an image library. Now we have the internet, though I do like reading and holding Birder's World in particular.
Beautiful page!! Lovely, cheerful colors!! Enjoyed the link to hear the bird's voice, too!
Oh, this page just made me smile! We figured that we have had over 50 baby finches, sparrows, & robins this year in our yard. AND they are on brood #4! I guess I'd better plant more sunflowers and start loading up on seed for the winter. Hugs.
i love blue jays! scrub and stellar. we don't have that red bird here in the wild west.
So glad you are back on your blog Melly I missed you! Gorgeous page, am off to play in my journal now, just wish I was as talented as you. Must practice harder...
Save our Jays! These poor dears are threatened from loss of territory. They live in the scrublands of Central Florida, not eye candy land and for years no one thought it was of any value, but it is the Galapagos Island of Florida. Some species live in these areas that exist nowhere else on earth. And the Scrub Jay is part of that environment and is not adjusting well at all. They are so family oriented, too! The older 'babies' help raise the younger ones and hang around with their parents for years (don't quote me on that). Such personable birds, too. I do hope you'll do lots of lovely art featuring Scrub Jays!
jays and crows...these birds are the opportunists of the bird world...they always remind me of Rhett Butler...you just gotta love a rascal when he not only looks gorgeous but also has wit and charisma! my husband and I were out driving one evening and saw a crow flying away from the roadside carrying a fast food bag in his beak...an image I will never forget...
Fantastic journal page. I love everything birds too, especially blue one! Thanks for sharing it. Is is certainly chipper and made me smile.
Wow. Just ... wow.
now that is a beautiful journal page!!! just lovely!
Since youre a fellow bird lover, I thought I'd tell you about the baby pigeons we have in a planter at work. We have this large planter with a lemon tree in it and a momma pigeon found her way into a corner of it and made a nest. Yesterday, we found 2 baby pigeons all hatched and looking adorable. I work in a senior womens residence so we all have been watching the "drama" unfold.
